Ni Hao Ma, Kindle!

1) Given China's "reputation for duplication," time would come when Amazon's Kindle reader would find its long-lost Asian twin. And it has--welcome the WeFound. Check it out at DVice.com . 2) So the line between genius and insanity gets thinner by the day. A study carried out in Hungary establishes a link between artistry and schizophrenia, through a lone gene called neuregulin 1 that's involved in brain development. Read about it in NewScientist.com . 3) Speaking of brain-behavior connections, people predisposed to lying through their teeth can now blame their brain goo. Scientists have discovered that pathological liars have more white matter and less grey matter than...umm... normal people. Read about it in Seed Magazine . 4) In pop music, the Black Eyed Peas continued their supreme run at the top of the Billboard charts. Their single "I Gotta Feeling," which replaced "Boom Boom Pow" at the top spot weeks ago, is still at #1. Hannah Montana...

Kasih Yang Terpisah

Looking through YouTube a few months ago, I chanced upon this song. Blew me away, even though I have no idea what it means. Performed by Idayu, one of Malaysia's top singers, Kasih Yang Terpisah has got that uber-mega-power ballad thing about it. Just thought I'd share.

Vogue: The 18-Year Gap

If there was one song that I believe had sealed Madonna's then already indelible place in pop music, that would be Vogue . Released in 1990 as the carrier single of her I'm Breathless album, Vogue was one of those dynamite chart-toppers destined to be a classic. According to Wikipedia, Vogue is Madonna's most successful single of her career prior to the advent of digital distribution. When the song was featured in the film The Devil Wears Prada , it still sounded very "now" despite the fact that it came out 18 years ago. Here's one of the Madonna's first public performances of the song, from the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards. I find the performance simply brilliant, even though Madonna lipsynchs the entire time. Just recently, Rihanna performed the song during the Fashion Rocks special. I love the arrangement--very Rihanna--but the last quarter of the song needed more oomph. The performance could have been a little more hard-edged, but maybe I'm biased...

Paula Then and Now

The first time I saw Paula Abdul was in 1988, through the video, (It's Just) The Way That You Love Me . Tapdancing and Top40 weren't exactly a prizewinning combo in the late-80s, but she definitely stood out. Though that single didn't even break into the Top 40, it would be re-released the following year after the mega-success of the singles Straight Up, Forever Your Girl and Cold-Hearted . I bought all her studio albums (on cassettes) except the remix compilation. As she continued to bag one hit after another, my friend and I would joke about her voice. ("Kung mananalo siya ng award, magpapasalamat siya sa Macintosh computers for her voice.") Note that when her hit Rush, Rush came out, Mariah Carey had just hit the scene, Madonna was vogueing as Breathless Mahoney, Janet Jackson was ruling Rhythm Nation, and Whitney Houston was raking in the moolah with I'm Your Baby Tonight . Paula seemed to be the odd-girl out among the powerhouse divas, the light-footed...
