THE FIRST ONE HUNDRED Years of Philippine Komiks and Cartoons

Image
Mango Comics' Boboy Yonzon makes this announcement in his Multiply blog . "THE FIRST ONE HUNDRED Years of Philippine Komiks and Cartoons coffee table book will be launched on Oct. 16, 2009 at 5PM at the Powerbooks, Megamall. Written by Dr. John A. Lent of Temple University and published by Yonzon Associates." This is a book that's long overdue, and it's such a thrill to know it's finally coming out. I'm soooo flattered, as well, that Zsazsa Zaturnnah herself will grace the cover jacket. It's, like... wowowowww!! For a preview of the inside pages, visit Boboy Yonzon's Multiply blog .

Backtrack: Paula Abdul singing live

Now that Paula Abdul has exited American Idol (to be replaced by Ellen DeGeneres), we can only wish her the best of luck. Feels weird seeing her do other things, like that little "Ellen" tribute she did in the recent VH1 Divas show--even hosting the entire event, for that matter. I hope that she finally, finally releases a full studio album. Check out Paula singing live in the early 90s, during the Yokohama leg of her "Spellbound" world tour. (She brought the show to Manila, too. Saw it and loved it.)

Do you have $75,000++?

If book publishing is your game and you have extra dollars in your bank account, why not start a book printing business--with a machine that can produce a bound copy of a book in less than ten minutes?! The Espresso Book Machine prints and binds "library-quality" books, is just slightly larger than those hefty photocopiers we see in major bookstores, and requires only one person to operate. This takes the concept of print-on-demand to a whole new level--imagine having a bookstore housing potentially thousands of titles, all within a teeny three square-meter space. See the Espresso Book Machine in action through this video. Produced by New York-based On Demand Books LLC, the unit will cost you at least $75,000. Unfortunately, the machine is currently only available for sale in the US, Australia and the United Kingdom.

Redesigning the Philippine Peso

Image
Interesting. In the website Numismaster.com, Richard Giedroyc of World Coin News reports that the Philippines may just change the design of its currency . This reminds me of that campaign years ago to redesign the American dollar, resulting in some really fabulous ideas . (See other U.S. dollar ideas in the Dollar ReDe$sign Project .) Since my brain wasn't working at the office, I decided to give the whole currency redesign thing a quick and rough whisk. Here's what I came up with--a still quite conservative take on our 20-peso bill. (click on the image to enlarge) Or a "what-if" 2000-peso bill. (click on the image to enlarge) Why don't you have a go at it? Whether you're a designer or not, see where your imagination takes you. I can imagine some of you doing something really breathtaking, while some might go the satirical route. (Can you design a bill made out of smoke?) When you're done, do share!

RIP: Patrick Swayze

He made women swoon in Dirty Dancing and Ghost . He even had a top 5 Billboard hit in "She's Like The Wind," which is a beautifully haunting song if you haven't heard it yet (music video below). Goodbye, Mr. Swayze. You're incredible, and indelible. Watch him in Dirty Dancing through this link .

Isn't this cute?

This just makes me smile. From EverythingUSB.com : " Slightly more practical is the Snoopy USB Hub. This 3 port USB hub has Snoopy in his ultra favorite role as an Flying Ace hunting the Red Baron."
