Broadening the Comic Book Movie Audience

The Daily Record reports that Failure to Launch and Sahara star Matthew McConaughey may play Marvel Comics' aquatic anti-hero The Sub-Mariner, to be directed by Terminator 3 helmsman Jonathan Mostow.

Created in 1939 by cartoonist Bill Everett, The Sub-Mariner is the son of a princess from an underwater kingdom (identified as Atlantis in 1960) and a human sea captain. He is mostly associated with the Fantastic Four and The Avengers.

This comic book movie doesn't excite me much--it's on the same level as Ghost Rider. It would be nice to introduce this character first in the next Fantastic Four movie--Rise of the Silver Surfer--which was supposed to start filming last month. But I suppose it's all part of the Marvel Plan. If the character won't move books, maybe he'll hog ticket sales.

And there's a good chance it will. The only reason why I might want to see this flick is the same reason I religiously watched Man From Atlantis, that old television series starring Patrick Duffy. The Sub-Mariner's costume isn't really a costume, just a green-scaled speedo. Then there's the Spockish pointy ears and the wings on the ankles (he can actually fly). Maybe they'll add variety with the character's other costumes, like the black overalls or the funky jacket. But, let's face it. A wet McConaughey running, or swimming, around in speedos means mesmerizing money shots, and will sure broaden this film's market reach.

I can see it now: "According to studio figures, The Sub-Mariner movie's audience was 70% women and gay men."

I agree with you that he should be introduced in Fantastic Four first :)

I can imagine Matthew now saying with that trademark ice-gaze of him:
"Name's Namor..."
... But I have a hard time imagining him with scaly underwear and brushed up straight hair. The pointy ears will do. :)

jac... sige...pag-iisiapan ko mga songs. :-)

rey...hello! Yuppers, magmumukhang katawa-tawa ang speedos with large scales. Baka puede nilang gawin yung katulad ng costume ni Spiderman.
